Reflection - Jack Crabtree, Teaching Pastor

My alarm rings at 6am on Thursdays. If I get up immediately I can be at the Syosset Campus by 6:30am to work out (lifting weights) with a group of men. When the alarm went off this week I wanted to hit “snooze”. My body said stay in bed but my mind instantly thought about my buddies waiting for me. They didn’t need me to unlock the church or lead the exercises (I’m learning from them). What gets me out of bed is our shared commitment to strengthen each other as we strengthen our own bodies.

Hebrews 10:24 says “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another…” These guys spur me on to take care of my body. They lift me up in my walk with Jesus by their encouragement and by just being there. Do you have a person or group that pushes you and helps you grow stronger as you follow Jesus?

Reflection, Jack Crabtree

This political season is filled with embarrassing leaks and secret revelations from candidate’s private conversations and e-mails.  Most of it is disappointing and disgusting. As I start to condemn them I think about what comes out of my mouth. “Death and life are in the power of the tongue” (Proverbs 18:21). Nothing is private; I will be responsible for my words. God’s Word gives instruction about my conversations—“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen” (Ephesians 4:29). In a world where most things are beyond my control, I am in total control of what comes out of my mouth.  When they play back my tapes, I want those words to be godly, clean, humble, uplifting and peaceful. How about you? Review your words this week.
