Reflections

Reflection, Steve Tomlinson

What is the church? It is a fair question. Most of us would be quick to say that it is the people and not a building but what does that mean? Recently several families in our body faced some very difficult life experiences and what warmed my heart was seeing so many of you, unsolicited, extending compassion to those in need. When crises happen, I quickly realize how inadequate I am as a pastor and I can even feel like a failure but that is when the Lord opens my eyes to see that it never was about me in the first place. It is about individual men and women each using their gifts to build up the community of faith. As I write this, I am in Ghana at the opening of an orphanage called the “Village of Hope” and once again I see how big the church is and how beautiful it is when each of us does our part.

Reflection, Rebekah Tanas

About a week ago I was serving in VBS at the Manhasset campus. Throughout the week as I saw children seeking to know more about Christ, I couldn't help but realize the importance of having a child-like faith. One of the preschoolers in my crew asked me why we had two hands. She was amazed when I told her that it was because God created us that way and everything he creates has a purpose, including her. She then asked me what her purpose was and when I told her that I did not know but that she can trust God, I could see her perspective change and she began to tell her friends what I had said. Matthew 18:3 says, “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” Oftentimes, it’s difficult to identify ourselves with “children” because they are seen as weak and dependent, but God calls us to be vulnerable and dependent on him just like a child is to it’s parents. God’s strength is made perfect in our weakness.
